In 1928, Mestre Bimba (Manuel dos Reis Machado), considered by many the most important Mestre of the 20th century, fused Capoeira Primitiva, of which he had been regarded a Master since 1918 at the age of 18, with Batuque and created Luta Regional Baiana (Capoeira Regional). He opened the first registered academy of Capoeira in 1930. In 1942 he established his academy at Rua Francisco Muniz Barreto #1 in the Central Maciel district of Salvador, Bahia which is the cradle, birthplace, and world capital of Traditional Capoeira Regional.

This same academy was passed on to Mestre Bimba's protégé, Mestre Vermelho 27, who was the only one of Mestre Bimba's students permitted to be photographed playing capoeira with him. Today, the academy continues with the name "Associacao de Capoeira Mestre Bimba".

At the age of 17 years, Antonio Sergio Pinho Freire de Carvalho (today known as Mestre Cabeludo) entered the academy "Associacao de Capoeira Mestre Bimba" to train under Mestre Vermelho 27 (José Carlos Andrade Bittencourt).

In 1994 Mestre Cabeludo created the group "Porto da Barra" to preserve and disseminate the original characteristics of authentic Capoeira Regional. Today, after decades in which Contemporary Capoeira has mischaracterized the art, there is a growing interest in this 4th generation lineage: Mestre Bimba, Mestre Vermelho 27, Mestre Cabeludo. The Grupo de Capoeira Porto da Barra is present in Canada, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Australia, Italy, Argentina as well as 5 states of Brazil and 34 satellites in the city of Salvador da Bahia.

Professor Comprido began training in 1992 in the same historic academy "Associacao de Capoeira Mestre Bimba". Since February 2000, he has been recognized as an Instructor by Mestre Cabeludo. In August 2004, he became the first Canadian Formado of Traditional Capoeira Regional and the first non-Brazilian Formado in the Grupo Porto da Barra worldwide. He is responsible for all the success and growth of our capoeira group here in Montreal, Canada.
